Illuminating the streets

The glow in the dark street art by Reskate studio reveals secret messages by night. These installations are found in back alleys and obscure locations around Manhattan that are open to the public for various visual interpretations. Each harbours a specific social or cultural message. This project encourages audiences to be active participants – engaging with the work and creating its response to those actions.

Photoluminescent paint is used where the paint can glow for up to 12 hours after exposure to light. The pictures come alive in the dark to stunning effect that captures the attention and imagination of the viewers. It uses the effect of irony where the artworks presented in the day contrasts those glowing in the night as it reveals a different message.

What looks like a planet in the day is an underwater helmet by night. It provides an immersive experience for audiences when they see this on the streets.

The beauty of street art is that it unexpectedly appears in some parts of the city, capturing our attention in an unintended way. It is a spontaneous feeling different from that of a structured exhibit in a museum. 

Street art is not just what you see. It is a story. The messages it conveys, what change it can bring. 

The consistency and trend  portrayed in these artworks reveal the personality of the artist in his style of work and a message he is conveying through these murals. 

This other piece, where a loaf of bread reveals a bread knife for the campaign Action Against Hunger. “The intervention on a wall invites us to think about the power of involvement to find effective solutions against hunger,” the artist writes.

The creativity and details of the artwork have attracted many to come down to this site to photograph the murals. Reskate has an Instagram page displaying all their different paintings. 

This free and immersive experience is a hidden treasure not found on mandatory tourist maps but something that people spontaneously stumble upon. These murals are something worth exploring in the nights of NYC.
